JOEL OYELEKE studies Literature in English at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is a poet, literary enthusiast, God addict, and curator of Poetry Village, OAU. ADESIYAN OLUWAPELUMI, TPC XI, is a young genre-bending creative who scribes from Ibadan, Nigeria. He is an Honourable Mention in the 2022 Coexist Lit International Metamorphosis Writing Contest, Winner of the Cheshire White Ribbon Day Creative Competition, & a shortlist in the August/September 2022 edition of the Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest.

JOEL: Let me start by asking – who you are.
ADESIYAN: I am a student of Medicine and Surgery, a literary enthusiast, a creative writer, a
poetry editor & a Christian. I currently reside in Oyo state with my family. I hail from Osun State,
Nigeria. Lastly, I am a member of The Poetic Collective.
JOEL: What else is not on your bio – something very unique about you?
ADESIYAN: I enjoy listening to Nigerian music a lot, & bingeing on movies. My favourite Nigerian musicians are Johnny Drille & Brymo because of their soulful & poetic style of music. Another fun fact about me is that I am addicted to fresh tomatoes (laughs). Also, when I am not writing poems or studying science textbooks, I enjoy playing chess, & reading romance novels, so you could say I am a romantic.
JOEL: Romantic? Well, your wife would know the truth (laughs). When did you start writing and why poetry?
ADESIYAN: I could say I have been writing since I was seven years old but I think I became intentional in the year 2021. Before this, I was vested in writing short stories, & multiple novels (which I never really finished anyway). I remember I was in Junior Secondary Class Two when we were given an assignment in English class to write a poem on any subject matter of our choice. Before that, I had never written a poem. Never! But amazingly, when I submitted my assignment, my teacher was so impressed that he praised me a lot. To my surprise, he also showed the poem to several of his colleagues. This catalyzed my interest in poetry. Consequently, I began writing poems. I wrote and learned from some of the poets I could find in our recommended literature texts then, the likes of Williams Shakespeare (I can still remember so vividly how often I wrote sonnets during recess), Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, Kofi Awonoor, Ama At Aidoo, Niyi Osundare and several others.
As I grew up, I suffered an identity crisis in school resulting in me isolating myself from everyone, & having low self-esteem as a kid. I fought hard through depression & suicidal tendencies, & hardly even had any friends by the time I was in my senior classes. Thus, poetry became an ally, & consequently, a medium of therapy. Now, I write because it is my buckler against the onslaught of these internal conflicts of self-love, & self-discovery. I write to tell my story in ways that defy fear or societal constraint that terms introversion a social dysfunction. I write to heal, to mend, & to conquer.
JOEL: Who is your favourite poet?
ADESIYAN: To be truthful, it is pretty hard to pick a favourite poet because there are always several poets I admire for different reasons, & uniqueness in style. Internationally, my favourite poets are Ocean Vuong, Danusha Laméris, Kaveh Akbar, Louise Glück, Sylvia Plath, Hanif Abdurraqib and many others. My favorite Nigerian poet however will be Samuel Adeyemi because his book “Heaven is a Metaphor” was the first poetry collection that fascinated and revealed to me how much could be achieved with language. Sometimes, my reverence for his work influences mine, unconsciously. Some other Nigerian poets I admire are Adedayo Agarau, Gbenga Adesina, Gbenga Adeoba, Romeo Oriogun, Pamilerin Jacobs, Itiola Jones and a bevvy of others.
Joel: Samuel Adeyemi is one of those I also admire. Your taste is wonderful. You recently announced that your chapbook ETHOS has been scheduled for publication by Ukiyoto, UK. How did the idea begin?
ADESIYAN: I have always been an inquisitive & argumentative individual, especially when it comes to the subject of religion, & unbelief — something we perceive as a social dysfunction, & how societal principles and ideologies sometimes compromise our loyalty to aristocratic manipulation. Writing about such a topic thus demanded a great measure of self-control, distancing myself from what the society forces me to think, & painting an almost mirror-image of what is, without blemishing the truth. Oftentimes, my poetry is praised for its intimacy & honesty, but most of all, what I aim to achieve most is poetry that dares to exist even when it is about issues that the society has shrouded us from talking about / investigating the truth behind them. Say injustice. Say mental health. Say men sieged of atheism.
Constructing Ethos was hectic, & at a point, I wanted to give up on the collection. The idea for the collection came a year ago (without the title though). I dumped it afterwards because I was not in the right state of mind or skill set to write such demanding work. Ethos demanded a lot from me, particularly mentally. I remember the first poem “Miracles” came about five months after the conception idea, & days, weeks, & months later I played around with lines (jotting down words, lines and complete stanzas for a poem jumping into my head), I read several essays on theology, arguments, in fact at some point I began to read Greek mythology which was the genesis of some poems: “Lucent Dreaming” & “Sappho” in the forthcoming book. I investigated existential nihilism, & it wasn’t until I had written the last poem in the collection forthcoming from Ninshar Arts “A Life by Death” that I knew for sure the book had ended. Perhaps, not decisively ended because even after I sent the book out for publication, I still felt a considerable amount of incompleteness. During the editing stage, I had to let go of some poems because of thematic correlation. It took eight months to complete “Ethos”.
Joel: Wow. That seems like a long ride. Did you read any work to help with inspiration?
ADESIYAN: Yes, I did. A lot. One book I held closely to me during this process was Kaveh Akbar’s Pilgrim Bells because of its eclectic ideology on religion, & human conduct. Romeo Oriogun’s Sacraments of Bodies also complemented in shaping the voice of poems in this collection.
Joel: What do you intend to achieve with Ethos?
ADESIYAN: Hopefully, continue to tell my undiluted stories, our untold stories through the vehicle of language & make poetry largely accessible to everyone. I am aware of the notion most people have that poetry is a tedious genre of literature to read & comprehend. However, I believe this to be false. It just means the reader hasn’t dived into the poem enough to the point where the poet wants him or her to crack the meaning/subject of the poem, something I tweeted about some weeks ago on Twitter. Poetry should be a medium of transmission of cultures, values, knowledge & memories, a necessary mechanism in journeying the message of a poem to a reader’s mind. As T.S Eliot once said, “Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood”, Poetry, I believe is a magnification of the deep, abstract feelings which make up the substratum of our being, for without which our lives will be an artless existence, the undiluted expression of man’s freedom from constraining emotion itself, our elastic imagination as said by the prestigious Vietnamese poet, Ocean Vuong is “the oldest form of technology.” Poetry is man’s he(art).
Joel: I love the paronomasia at the end (laughs). Where do you see Nigerian poetry ten years from now?
ADESIYAN: I see Nigerian poetry flourishing to bigger stages, making waves, more poetry books, a larger poetry readership base, & most of all, more governmental investments / NGOs involvement in raising young and talented creatives. I see budding poets taking the mantle of old masters and treading the path for a new legacy. I see Nigerian poetry making unthinkable accomplishments. I see Nigerian poetry making its hallmark on the world’s map.
Joel: Amen. What is your advice for younger poets?
ADESIYAN: Read. Read. Read. Write. Read. Read. Read. Write. Also, always aim to improve as a creative, & take active participation in the accommodating literary community. And don’t forget that the output of your craft is how much work and dedication you put into it.
Joel: Lastly, do you have any other forthcoming projects?
ADESIYAN: Currently, I have another poetry chapbook in the oven. It is a documentation of the human experience from the universal pronoun “we” – navigating through contrasting elements of joy & despair, vulnerability & resilience in creating a multi-layered exploration of human travails. A clustered work on displacement from the self to the general, it seems. So far the collection is coming together, chaotically, & hopefully, it will make its way to the outside world sCopy

The Federal Emergency Management Agency maintains a database of flood zones throughout the country. It maps the regulatory floodways — the places that will flood first and are most dangerous — and the areas that will flood in extreme events.

Camp Mystic has two sites, both of which overlap with either the floodway or areas the federal government has determined have a 1% or 0.2% annual chance of flooding.
The camp confirmed that at least 27 campers and counsellors perished in the floods, in a statement on its website. It said it is in communication with local authorities who are continuing to search for “missing girls.”
Ten minutes north on the South Fork is Camp La Junta, a boys camp. Some of Camp La Junta’s property also coincides with areas known to flood, though several of its buildings are located in the lower-risk zone, or outside the flood zones entirely.

В Приморском районном суде Санкт-Петербурга продолжается рассмотрение так называемого уголовного дела “Лайф-из-Гуд” — “Гермес” — “Бест Вей” — продолжается допрос признанных следствием потерпевшими и свидетелей обвинения. Например, на одном из летних заседаний выступал некто Голубев — водитель из Удмуртии, который был пайщиком кооператива и клиентом компании “Гермес”. Как рассказали протоколирующие заседания адвокаты, Голубев сообщил, что еще до событий начала 2022 года — активной фазы расследования уголовного дела, вышел из компании “Гермес”, а также написал нотариально заверенное заявление о выходе из кооператива “Бест Вей”. Из “Гермеса” получил через деньги через схему p2p — так, мол, консультант “Гермеса” ему рекомендовал, “чтобы не платить комиссию”. При выводе средств Голубев получил больше, чем ранее положил на счет. Голубев решил выйти также из кооператива, так как написал заявление — но деньги получил из-за ареста счетов только в этом году. Предъявляет претензии к тому, что денег пришлось ждать три года, хотя они не выплачивались из-за ареста счетов и позиции следствия и прокуратуры, состоящей в том, что выплаты должны быть запрещены даже пайщикам, выходящим из кооператива: арест счета — не препятствие для таких выплат, если оно санкционировано следствием и прокуратурой. Голубев при этом требует вернуть вступительный и членские взносы, так как “кооператив нарушил условия соглашения”. При этом изначально ему был присвоен статус потерпевшего, в суде же он выступал уже в статусе свидетеля. Таких “потерпевших”, как Голубев, немало, отмечают адвокаты: так, одна из пайщиц на недавнем заседании обвинила кооператив в том, что он ей не выплатил средства по заявлению о выходе, в то время как она сама систематически отказывается подтвердить реквизиты для перечисления средств, получает письма из кооператива, отправляет уведомления о прочтении, но не отвечает на них. Состоялось долгожданное разбирательство по апелляционному представлению Прокуратуры Санкт-Петербурга на решение Приморского районного суда Санкт-Петербурга полностью снять арест с одного из трех счетов кооператива, на которых почти 4 млрд рублей. Сейчас кооператив распоряжается только вновь поступившими на эти счета средствами — за счет этих средств происходят выплаты пайщикам, написавшим заявление о выходе из кооператива, при этом темп выплат крайне низкий из-за проверок каждого платежа Росфинмониторингом и банками. Кроме того, по решению суда происходят выплаты с арестованных средств по исполнительным листам тем пайщикам, кто решил не ждать выплат, а предъявил и выиграл иски к кооперативу о возврате средств, а также налогов кооператива и зарплаты его персоналу. Кооператив ходатайствовал перед судом о полном снятии ареста с одного из счетов кооператива — самых маленьких, в банке ПСБ, на более чем 600 млн рублей, чтобы гарантированно рассчитаться со всеми примерно 2000 пайщиков, которые подали заявление о выходе из кооператива, — не зависеть от возвратных платежей в кооператив, которые из-за ареста счетов были затруднены и сейчас осуществляются с задержками — с которыми кооператив борется, но быстро эти платежи в нужном объеме вряд ли сможет получить. Решение суда первой инстанции о снятии ареста было в апреле, назначение рассмотрения апелляции в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде крайне затянулось из-за того, что прокуратура добавила к основному апелляционному представлению дополнительное — рассмотрение состоялось только в начале июля. При этом уже в самом заседании прокуратура добавила новые доводы, заявив, что в реестре выплат, представленном кооперативом еще в начале 2025 года, из 773 строк по пайщикам, которым произведены выплаты, имеются 14 строк, в которых фигурирует один из подсудимых — Выдрин, а также 13 лиц, которые назывались лицами, признанными потерпевшими, в рамках уголовного процесса как лица, которым передавались деньги для компании “Гермес”. Прокуратуру возмутило то, что лица, которые, возможно, виновны в хищениях, получили средства раньше лиц, признанных потерпевшими. При этом Выдрин написал заявление о выходе из кооператива еще до того, как был привлечен в уголовное дело, и ни на какие его активы арест не накладывался. Санкт-Петербургский городской суд согласился с доводами прокуратуры, отменив решение суда первой инстанции в части снятия ареста со счета — при этом он не подверг сомнению тезис, на котором было основано это решение Приморского районного суда: несоразмерность общей суммы ущерба в уголовном деле — 282 млн рублей и общей суммы арестованных средств только кооператива как гражданского ответчика по данному уголовному делу — почти 4 млрд рублей (при этом есть еще аресты средств других лиц). В самом конце июля Приморским районным судом будет уже рассматриваться продление или непродление арестов средств на счетах на новый трехмесячный срок — и кооператив опять будет ходатайствовать о снятии ареста со счета в банке ПСБ. В Приморском районном суде началось также новое гражданское дело — по иску пайщицы кооператива Дорониной к пайщику кооператива, объявляющему себя его альтернативным председателем, Георгию Моисееву, ранее активисту кооператива и координатору программы по проведению региональных митингов в поддержку кооператива. Судебное разбирательство по существу начнется в сентябре, судья потребовал от представителей Моисеева представить первичные документы о якобы проведенном (без решения совета кооператива) голосовании по выборам новых уполномоченных, так как его юрист сообщил, что документы — на кооперативных участках. Председателям самочинных комиссий по перевыборам, якобы прошедшим весной на 13 из 14 кооперативных участков, придется представить первичные документы, бюллетени для голосования, при этом общее число голосовавших должно быть не менее 7,5 тыс., так как в кооперативе — 15 тыс. пайщиков. (На одном из участков — кооперативном участке (КУ) № 7: иркутско-бурятско-забайкальском — группа Моисеева проводить голосование не решилась, так как еще в начале года одна из пайщиц подала против Моисеева иск о незаконных действиях в иркутский суд, который сейчас активно рассматривается.) В суд с первичными документами, как подчеркивают адвокаты, придется явиться председателям “комиссий по проведению голосований на кооперативных участках”: на КУ № 1 — Атрохиной Н. А.;на КУ № 2 — Жакун В. В.,на КУ № 3 — Моисееву Г. В.;на КУ № 4 — Веселкову А. В.;на КУ № 5 — Седаковой Г. Ф. (интересно, что она не является пайщиком);на КУ № 8 — Арефьевой Л. Extreme heat is a killer and its impact is becoming far, far deadlier as the human-caused climate crisis supercharges temperatures, according to a new study, which estimates global warming tripled the number of deaths in the recent European heat wave.
For more than a week, temperatures in many parts of Europe spiked above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Tourist attractions closed, wildfires ripped through several countries, and people struggled to cope on a continent where air conditioning is rare.

The outcome was deadly. Thousands of people are estimated to have lost their lives, according to a first-of-its-kind rapid analysis study published Wednesday.
A team of researchers, led by Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, looked at 10 days of extreme heat between June 23 and July 2 across 12 European cities, including London, Paris, Athens, Madrid and Rome.
They used historical weather data to calculate how intense the heat would have been if humans had not burned fossil fuels and warmed the world by 1.3 degrees Celsius. They found climate change made Europe’s heat wave 1 to 4 degrees Celsius (1.8 to 7.2 Fahrenheit) hotter.
The scientists then used research on the relationship between heat and daily deaths to estimate how many people lost their lives.
They found approximately 2,300 people died during ten days of heat across the 12 cities, around 1,500 more than would have died in a world without climate change. In other words, global heating was responsible for 65% of the total death toll.
“The results show how relatively small increases in the hottest temperatures can trigger huge surges in death,” the study authors wrote.
Heat has a particularly pernicious impact on people with underlying health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory problems.
People over 65 years old were most affected, accounting for 88% of the excess deaths, according to the analysis. But heat can be deadly for anyone. Nearly 200 of the estimated deaths across the 12 cities were among those aged 20 to 65.

“This is certainly not what the world expects to see in a country that is the world’s sole superpower,” it added. “But that sadly is the reality of the US.”
This rhetoric isn’t just embarrassing for Washington, it’s also a sign of how the US may find its influence damaged by a perceived hypocrisy over human rights at home and abroad.
Earlier today, Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam pointed to the unrest in the US as evidence of Washington’s “double standards.”
“They attach great importance to the national security of their country, but look at our national security through tinted spectacles, especially the current situation in Hong Kong,” she added.
The ability of Washington to influence Beijing’s position on Hong Kong – which is in part founded on fear of outside influence in the city – was already severely limited. The Trump administration’s reaction to protests at home may have hurt its position even further.

Winslet recounted that while she had previously executive produced a number of her projects, “Lee” was the first movie where she served as a full-on producer. That required her involvement from “beginning to end,” including when the film was scored in post-production.
She explained to Norton that when she attended the recording of the film’s score in London, while looking at the 120-piece orchestra, she saw someone who looked mighty familiar to her.
“I’m looking at this violinist and I thought, ‘I know that face!’” she said.
At one point, other musicians in the orchestra pointed to him while mouthing, “It’s him!” to her, and it continued to nag at Winslet, prompting her to wonder, “Am I related to this person? Who is this person?”
Finally, at the end of the day, the “Reader” star went in to where the orchestra was to meet the mystery violinist, and she was delighted to realize he was one of the violinists who played on the ill-fated Titanic ocean liner as it sank in James Cameron’s classic 1997 film.
“It was that guy!” Winslet exclaimed this week, later adding, “it was just wonderful” to see him again.
“We had so many moments like that in the film, where people I’ve either worked with before, or really known for a long time, kind of grown up in the industry with, they just showed up for me, and it was incredible.”
“Lee” released in theaters in late September, and is available to rent or buy on AppleTV+ or Amazon Prime.
